How is the weather? (Fall 2009 / Winter 2010)

Topics: 23   Posts: 375

Hi Freedom Gardeners,

WOW - 175 replies and 8045 views on my previous weather post!!!!

Updated topic here about the 2009 FALL/WINTER weather. New season, new topic post.  Since we are all at the mercy of mother nature  (unless you grow entirely in a greenhouse), the weather means more to us than the average person, so the question is:

How is the weather in your neck of the woods?

WINDY!!! And everything still covered in ash (which is once again blowing into the open windows and over any laundry I hang to dry...) Yesterday was pleasantly cool as compared to last weekend's brutal heat. Here's hoping the cool is a trend!

Rain and Cold here in Northern Arkansas.Highs in the 50-60 and lows inthe 40s Wood stove is cranked up . We heat 100% with wood. Since we have 80 acres of woods it is always free. You just have to cut it.

We've had some beautiful weather. An extraordinary amount of rain for fall. 3" last night, and of course two weeks ago we had 3 feet of rain!!! I'm so glad I had not started planting all the fruit and other plants here.
After a bit of a long summer, it is cooling down nicely. Days are mostly in the 70's - evenings in the low 60's or so. Often the days are clear and sunny - the sun is still warm, so in the afternoon it can reach the 80's which means that there is still time for the rest of the tomatoes to ripen, beans to grow and seedlings to germinate.
What I love best is that it is now great weather to do hard and heavy work. I can not manage that except for half a day in the summer (the cooler half!!) - but now it is easy to work hard and do heavy lifting and planting all day.

Here on the Front Range of the Rockies it's warm today, 70's, with a big change coming tomorrow. They're saying the "S" word, snow. We had a killing frost last week and all the leaves are changing. By weekend, supposed to be in the '30's with another chance of snow.

Cloudy and rainy here after a dry, dry summer. Temps are already supposed to be down in the 30s at night this week - early for zone 7b. But the collards and greens will enjoy the cooler temp!

It rained for a few days, then it was 95+ degrees for a few days and now wet again for a few days.

Last week we were nearly 80 degrees, but tonight and tomorow (Wed.) we're maybe getting snow. Then we are supposed to get backinto the 70s. My poor plants haven't known which season it was all year.
I'm picking my chili peppers today- they have been thriving till now. I've got kale, chard, and mustard in containers and they will be glad of the cool weather.

Rainy but at least a bit warmer than the past few weeks.  Hoping for sun in the next few days so the seeds in the greenhouse sprout.

Dry, dry, dry summer. Almost a record (one day short). But, it's been raining off and on for the last three weeks.

Hot and dry. October was cool for two weeks, then high summer again. I am *sooo* tired of summer. We haven't had a decent winter in what feels like years. And they're saying this year's El Nino will be a dry one, too. That's no help!

I'm really hoping Thanksgiving's cool enough to accommodate a sweater. My shorts and t-shirts are getting really worn...

We are having a very normal fall actually. October was a bit more wet then normal but November is our wettest month of the year typically and the forecasts indicate we are in for the "normal" amount of lots of rain! Temperatures have been on average reaching a high of around mid 50's and and the lows have been in the upper 30's/low 40's. Likely to stay like that for a few more weeks.

Snowing here tonight in the Adirondack Mountains....

After record rainfall for September and October here in Atlanta, November is beautiful! Just the right amount of rain, lots of sun, seasonable temperatures with great swings between day and night - perfect for a great crop of lettuces!

It is as fall like as SoCal can be. Dry - no rain. And not enough daylight for garden work!

It is 32 degrees this morning. AKA cold.

Topics: 23   Posts: 375
It has been 32 degrees in the morning for the past 10 days or so. No frost, no freeze - just plain cold.

It was quite a nice warm day yesterday. Low 80's here. Forecasted 10 degrees cooler today and a 20% chance of rain tonight and tomorrow morning (I'll believe it when I see it). The weekend day time temps will be dropping another 10 degrees to the low 60's with very cold nights expected here Sat, Sun, Mon and Tues.

BLIZZARD!

Beautifully clear after yesterday's rain, but bright and sunny if cold and lightly breezy. I wish we were getting more rain than just yesterday, but with all my CE training I know parceling it out like this is best, especially with the fire-bare hillsides. It's so unfortunate we had such high winds before the rains - heaven only knows how much seed native got blown beyond useful reach in the forest.

Justin - how do you get up early enough every day to get out there BEFORE the "coldest just before the dawn" hits?! I am so not an early morning farmer, much less one with the fortitude to go out in below freezing weather...

"Heat wave" - it's 26 degrees this morning ;-)

We ended up with 8-10 inches snow last night. Temp today is 15 degrees and is supposed to bottom out around 4 below tonight. But then the temps are supposed to slowly crawl back up in the low 20's the rest of the week.

Sorry to hear about your low temps there tho.

Bitter wind and cold here today. single digit with the wind and not much higher without it Stay warm everyone

WINDY today. I need to figure out a better clamping system for the tents on the garden.
The wind didn't seem to dry out the soggy clay much. Am I ever going to get things organized and ready for spring planting?

a toasty 18 degrees in my neck of the woods, Brrrr, but sunny, one more cold, then back to near normal, (40-50s highs/ 30s for the lows). nothing like 18 degrees to make 30s feel warm, i guess it's all relative.

Rain!

Sunny, clear and bitterly cold over here in PA. Wednesday the wind was so strong it tore a bit of siding off the neighbor's house - lucky my garden's all tucked in for the winter and nothing was damaged!

Hi from Snowy New England!
We are fully involved in winter here. Snowing and about 16 degrees with the wind chill factor. It is really quite pretty. All the raised beds are covered in a nice blanket of snow.  Bruce aka Smittyctz6

Out here in icy Wisconsin we're in the middle of a nice Arctic Blast - it was 3 degrees just a couple of days ago. Yesterday we woke up to a toasty 9 degrees. It's strange to go outside and say "Huh, feels like it's warming up" only to find that it's still in the single digits!

In the high twenties and thirties last night but up to 57 today, but Ya know after traveling to Chicago with my wife one February , I have since then tell everyone the winters in Florida are just an Inconvenience not a real Winter, Guilt Trip

Insanely cold for Georgia. Going on two weeks of very cold freezing weather and almost another week to go. I think we're breaking records....

Oh, I will add to girlgroupgirl's post to say that it is now actually snowing here in Atlanta. Our weather has been so cold for so many days that if we get any kind of accumulation of this precipitation it will surely "stick" and create a mess on the roads. Some food growing in the open has frozen, like lettuce; other greens should recover just fine, like kale and collards. Too cold to do the typical winter chores outdoors, as far as I'm concerned. Maybe next week.....meanwhile, we can always cook soup.

Dear El Nino,
I think I love you.
We had a horrible cold snap before Christmas, I wanted to dig parsnips for Christmas dinner but my raised beds were frozen right down to the bottom.
Now it is warm, warm, warm. In the 50's. Quite a lot of rain, but that is the standard here. It is bright and sunny today.
Some of my strawberries have flowers on them already, rhubarb was coming up but the chickens bested my flimsy flower pot protective device : )

Rain, rain, rain... it's pouring!! Heaviest I've seen in years. Wonderful for me. Just worried for others in the mudslide areas.
