There are many potential issues involved here: a possible climate change root cause, political issues involved in exchanging germplasm, traditional farming methods....
I suspect that "mono culture" issues may be involved also. In "nature" there is wide diversity. But to get maximum yield the supply corporations push a very narrow range of products. If it turns out they are susceptible to something... big trouble because ALL of them are the same.
